First Timothy: The Church: Pillar of Truth
"The Practice Of Church Leadership"
June 18, 2017. (Part 2 of a two-parts series on church leadership.) Today's message was taught by Pastor Joe Hellerman is the second of his messages based in 1 Timothy 3:1-7, where Paul writes to Timothy about the elders of the church.
While there are no scriptures that precisely say "here is how you should organize your church" there are many passages that allude to the plurality of elders - or pastors or overseers - in the early church, including: Acts 13:1, 14:23, and 20:28-29; Philippians 1:1; 1 Thessalonians 5:12; Titus 1:5; James 5:14; and 1 Peter 1:1 and 5:1-4.
Pastor Joe takes a detailed look at these scriptures to show us the plurality of church leadership is "biblical" and also spends time on the benefits of plurality in leadership. Such benefits include both what plurality guards against (abusive authority, celebrity-ism, and more) and what plurality brings to the church (balance in the church's teaching ministry, wisdom to the decision-making process, and more). The ultimate benefit of plurality in the leadership of the church is that it models the #1 evidence of Christian faith: love for God, and love for others.
